For this week ahead we have practice on Tuesday and Wednesday and then a break from organized training until the following Wednesday.  You probably already guessed this but the race scheduled for Bogus on Wednesday 12/21 has been canceled.  A few quick notes on the week:

  • Tuesday 12/20- Comp athletes arrive at Fort Boise at 3:00 for strength training outdoors then plan on being joined by comp-devo who should arrive at 3:45.  After 3:45 we may be joined by some BBNT alums.  Either way we will run, do some drills and play a game finishing off around 5:15/5:30.
  • Wednesday 12/21- Comp and Comp-Deco meet at the Bogus Offices at 1PM for an exploratory trip to Banner Ridge (by Idaho City).  Reports are there was good skiing there two weeks ago and if its like Galena, the snow that fell in late November is still holding up pretty good now.  I’m not sure how the grooming will be so I’m recommending classic skis and bringing a pair of running shoes and in the worse case we can go for a run at high elevation in preparation for skiing at elevation later in the season.  I expect to be back in town around 5:30/6:00 but we’ll call from the road again.
  • Training from Thursday 12/22-Tuesday 12/27- I wrote some guidelines for on your own training over this period on the schedule but I would recommend getting to snow if possible or keeping up with the dryland training we have been doing.  I think you guys mostly know what to do but drop me a line if you have questions.

1. Next Weeks Schedule- Practice Tuesday and Thursday next week will be the same as this past week and we will take off for Sun Valley on Friday.  As with last week be sure to bring helmets, poles and skis if you have them on Tuesday as team supplies will be stretched thin.  On Thursday please bring court shoes although if the weather is good we will likely stay outside one again.
2. Christmas Classic Trip Next Weekend- I have put together a schedule for the trip, packing list and final costs.  I do apologize, the costs ended up being a little higher than my initial predictions but we plan on covering all expenses once you hop in the van on Friday at 1PM.
3. Tentative Winter Break schedule-  I put down a rough draft of the winter break schedule to help you out with planning purposes for the time off of school.  We will continue to put together weekly schedules that have the specifics with times and locations.  Given the uncertain snow conditions there may be more drastic changes to it as we go along.

After next weekend we do have a couple of events/races that will affect our schedule but we won’t have any more out of town trips until February.  A couple of dates for your long range calendar:
February 17-19th Western States Youth Ski Festival in Bozeman
March 17-18th Tentative Overnight Yurt Trip

As a final reminder parents are encouraged to attend the parents meeting this Tuesday (12/13) night at 8PM at the Bogus Basin Offices.

BBNT Training Dec 5-11th Comp-Devo

Hello Comp-Devo Families,
Attached you will find next weeks schedule but there are a lot of notes to go with it so read carefully:

  • On Tuesday- Please bring your own rollerskis (skate or classic), helmet and poles as I expect our collection to be in high demand with both comp and comp-devo using them at the same time.
  • On Wednesday- We now have access to a portion of the Fort Boise Rec Center gymnasium but they requested that we bring separate “Court Shoes” that won’t track dirt in after our run outside and won’t leave black marks on the floor.
  • Friday is the deadline for going on the trip to the Christmas Classic Races on December 16-18th.  I need a $50 deposit in hand by then so we can cancel unneeded hotel reservations.
  • Luke and Eric are the best people to contact about practice this week as I will likely only be at comp-devo practice on Tuesday.
  • As mentioned previously hats are available for pick up or purchase and the parents meeting is now on Tuesday December 13th at 8PM at the Bogus Basin Offices.

If you are in need of any inspiration during this snow-less December you might be excited to know that the US nordic, biathlon and ski jumping teams have had a very impressive week on their respective World Cup circuits.  The highlight was probably Kikkan Randall’s world cup victory in the Duseldorff sprint yesterday.  Potentially more exciting than the win was that she was established as the favorite going into the race.  It has probably been 30 years since an American was the favorite in a cross country world cup and maybe the first time ever for an American woman.  You can see a short video of the final heat here by clicking on the “Randall Shines Again” link: http://www.fiscrosscountry.com/multimedia/race-video.html

bbnt-training-nov-28-dec-41

Mother nature didn’t exactly cooperate with our plans to be skiing this week so it looks like we have at least another week of dryland training ahead of us.  I scoped out Bogus today and while it might be skiable in places, its clear they don’t want people out there so we will have to wait for more snow.  I appreciate your patience/flexibility while we wait for winter to fully arrive.

We will continue on our Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday-

Sunday Winter schedule even though there is no snow.  Pay close attention to this weeks schedule though as it is a little bit confusing
Tuesday 3:45- Combined Comp/Comp-Devo session at  Camelsback Park
Thursday 3:45- Comp-Devo only at Municipal park
Saturday 8:00-Combined Comp/Comp-Devo adventure meeting at the Bogus Offices at 8AM.  Where we are driving to and what we are doing TBD
Sunday: 11:00- Comp-Devo at Fort Boise with Eric and Luke while Comp is at Municipal Park with Nick.

Also Jackets and Suits arrived so they will be available for pick up on Tuesday if you have paid in full.

Finally two Dates for your long range calendar

  • Tuesday December 6th (tentatively 8PM): Parents meeting in conjunction with the BBNT board meeting at the Bogus Offices.  I will be giving a short presentation on some ways you can help your athletes succeed and it will be a good chance to meet the board and other parents.
  • Friday December 9th- Deadline for your deposit to go on the trip to Sun Valley for races on the 16th and 17th of December (see earlier email for more details).  I learned recently that the races both days will take place between 10 and 11AM.

BBNT Training November 21-27th

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

No attachments this time around so please read carefully below for next weeks schedule.  As a reminder we are switching to our “Normal Winter Schedule” this week which is Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday-

Sunday

Luke Studebaker and Eric Reynolds will be in charge of Comp-Devo practice this week (as I’m out of town) and through at least January.  They would be good guys to get to know and to put there numbers in your contacts right now so you can get in touch with them when you need to.  Luke’s number is 208-340-9535 and Eric’s is 208-841-5976

Tuesday- 3:45 Camelsback Park: Active Warm Up, ~5×2-3min Running Intervals and a game
Thursday- No practice for Thanksgiving
Saturday- 8:30 Bogus Basin Offices: Meet at BBO either way but be prepared to hop in the vans to skate ski at Bogus if possible or drive up and Run/Hike upper Hulls Gulch trail.  Expect to return to BBO around 11:30
Sunday- 11:00 Fort Boise (Parking Lot closest to Military Reserve) Last mountain bike practice of the season in the foothills.

A number of you are headed to snow for most or part of this week (which is exciting!).  A few quick recommendation

Ski as much as you can and get used to that snow feeling.
Generally ski easy to start off but 10-20 second “speeds” like we’ve been doing in practice all fall are encouraged.
Be cautious of injury or illness from skiing too much at the start of the season.  Injuries often crop up when you increase your activity level suddenly or transition to new movements.

Finally the last thing I wanted to let you know about was that we are having a “BBNT Trial Period” the first two weeks in December if you have any other friends who might want to try it out, most likely they won’t be just “trying” comp-devo but they may be interested in the Rec Team (Mostly athletes in middle school) which will be going up to Bogus at the same time as us on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.  If you do know anyone interested in the Trial Period have them get in touch with me so we can get them set up with the necessary paperwork for that.

Thanks
Nick Crawford/Luke Studebaker/Eric Reynolds

BBNT Training Nov 14-20

  • Tuesday- Comp-Devo Please bring a flashlight and an extra layer
  • Thursday (11/18)- We will be meeting at the baseball fields on 36th st near Hillside Jr High at 3:45.  If you don’t want to bike all the way over there you can meet me at the vans by 3:30 as well.
  • Friday (11/19)- Waxing will be available after practice in my garage (3322 Crane Creek Rd) from 5:45-8PM , if you have new skis they should get at least 5 layers of wax in them before they are used and we should mark your kick zones for classic skis.  If you have skis with summer wax on them they should be scraped and maybe a layer of colder was applied.
  • Sunday (11/21)- Depart from the Bogus Offices at 8AM

Saturday (11/19) Afternoon- I will be putting on a “coaches clinic” at my house, 3322 Crane Creek Rd (right off of Bogus Basin Rd) from noon-2 or 3PM.  I hope to have our entire coaching staff for the winter there along with any interested volunteer coaches, parents or community members.  If you are interested in joining please just give me a few days notice so I have a rough sense of how many people to expect.  It will be about 1/3rd administrative (van driving, schedules, contact info…) 1/3rd general coaching strategies (how to set up a practice, drills, curriculum planning) and 1/3rd technique outside with some rollerski demos.

If you are interested in lending a hand coaching with the team this winter but can’t attend this clinic, please let me know as well.  I’m putting together a list of people who want to help out our coaching staff as needed and available.

BBNT Training November 7-13th

On Friday we will have practice at Fort Boise instead of Camelsback like most Friday’s this fall.  At Fort Boise we meet over by the softball field in the parking lot closest to Military Reserve.  Practice will finish up around 5:00 and if you are interested you can then do the ski erg (double pole simulator kind of like a rowing erg) sprints put on by Idaho Nordic at the Fort Boise community center from 5-6PM.  The sprints should take 5-8 minutes and I’m not exactly sure how challenging they will be for those in 6th and 7th grade but they would for sure be good for those in 8th or 9th grade.  Please let me know on Tuesday if you would like to do them so we can add you to Idaho Nordic’s schedule.  Finally please bring the $5 entry fee with you on Friday.

I am taking a few days of vacation this week so Mikey will be the contact person for practice on Friday and Saturday.

  • This Saturday (October 29th) is the last day to order jackets and race suits.  If you haven’t done so already please swing by World Cycle ASAP because I will be picking up the order forms to submit to Podiumwear around 5PM on Saturday.

A few notes for Comp Athletes:

  • Please get your deposits in for the West Yellowstone Thanksgiving Camp in by Wednesday November 2nd.  As or right now it looks like Bridger and I will have a nice one on one camp :)
  • Next week will be a very hard week of training.  Be sure to be well rested going into the week and get ahead on homework starting now.  The only training worth doing is that what you can recover from.  Also beware of casually skipping a session next week.  If you skip one session out of a high volume week it becomes an average week and you never really challenge yourself with your training.  You can’t improve unless you challenge yourself.
  • We will be switching the strength training around for a month or so block of circuit training.  The circuits while short to start off with will be very challenging.
  • On Thursday we will be meeting at the Baseball field on 36th St. behind Hillside Jr High.  For those of you who bike to practice this is a relatively long ride.  You are welcome to meet me at the Bogus Offices by 3:30 and ride over or arrange a ride with someone who is driving.
  • There will be two sessions on Friday at Camelsback Park as Boise and North Jr. High have no school, sorry Jackson I think you still have class.
  • Note the time change next Sunday November 6th.  We will be meeting at 9AM of the “new time”

BBNT Training October 24-30

  • Friday 10/28- By request, both Comp and Comp-Devo will be going rollerskiing out at Hidden Springs.  We will meet at the Bogus Offices at 3:45 and load up the vans to head out there.  This is the first (and only?) time where both teams are Roller Skiing at the same time so team equipment will be at a premium.  If you have your own Rollerskis bring them and you can choose which technique you will do.  If you are borrowing skis bring skate boots so you can either skate or double pole depending on whats available.  We will finish up later than the past few Friday’s and I expect to be back at the Bogus Offices around 6:00.
  • Saturday 10/29- There is a Nordic Trail Work Day at Bogus and we will send one van up to help out departing the Bogus Offices at 8:30AM and returning somewhere around 2:00PM, depending on how the work goes.  All Comp-Devo athletes and parents are encouraged to attend and are welcome to ride up in the van.  Please bring water, loppers (hand clippers), work gloves and snacks.
  • Saturday 10/29- Comp athletes, are welcome to participate in the trail work day but the scheduled workout is a distance run while we cheer on the XC runners at the state meet.  We will meet at the Bogus Offices at 11AM.
  • Sunday 10/30- Comp athletes (only) have a Time Trial on Pierce Park Rd that some of the Idaho Nordic Members might attend.  You can choose whether you want to do skate or classic technique.
